First for the Vote: How Chicago Women Won Suffrage for the Nation

March 3, 2021 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Chicago women made Illinois the first state east of the Mississippi to grant limited voting rights to women in 1913. The women — through their clubs and progressive reform movements  — were the backbones in the national fight for suffrage.  Their success greatly influenced the tactics and achievements of suffragists in other states and helped make Illinois the first state in the nation to ratify the 19th Amendment. This program celebrates the 100th anniversary of US women’s suffrage by highlighting the pivotal role of Chicago women, as well as others with vintage photographs and quotes from the women themselves. This program will occur live via the Zoom application. To register and receive a link to attend email kspringer@acornlibrary.org or fill out this form.
